Description
ZIPList5 CBSA is a ZIP code database file listing every active ZIP code currently defined by the US Postal Service. For each ZIP code which is part of a metro area this database identifies the Core Based Statistical Area (CBSA) code in which the ZIP code lies. The CBSA is a 5-digit numeric code which identifies the Metropolitan Statistical Area or Micropolitan Statistical Area in which the ZIP code lies.

For larger metro areas, this database also includes the Metropolitan Division (if any) in which the ZIP code lies.

CBSAs and Metropolitan Divisions are five-digit numeric codes assigned to the 960 metropolitan, micropolitan, and division statistical areas defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), a part of the administrative branch of the Federal Government.

For additional background information regarding Core Based Statistical Areas, click here.

This database has about 41,800 records, one record for each active ZIP code. Each record of ZIPList5 CBSA also includes the preferred city name, state abbreviation, county name and county FIPS code, primary telephone area code, time zone, daylight saving time flag and ZIP code type associated with the ZIP code.

ZIPList5 CBSA includes a cross-reference file listing all valid metropolitan statistical area names, micropolitan statistical area names, and metropolitan division names with their associated 5-digit numeric codes.

Please note: This database includes all active ZIP codes defined by the US Postal Service, including ZIP codes which are not part of any defined metro area. Rural ZIP codes, which are not part of any defined metropolitan area, are included in this database. Rural ZIP codes have neither a CBSA nor a Metropolitan Division code. Those ZIP codes which do lie within a defined metropolitan area have an associated CBSA code and may also have an Metropolitan Division code as well.

ZIPList5 CBSA is an excellent tool for defining sales territories, distribution systems, or franchise territories, etc. ZIPList5 CBSA divides the country into 935 geographic areas based primarily on population. However, there are rural portions of nearly every state which are not included in any of the 935 defined metropolitan or micropolitan areas. If you need a geopraphic coding scheme which covers the entire country, we recommend our Market Area (MA) database, ZIPList5 Market Area. Market Areas have distinct advantages over CBSA/Metropolitan Divisions in some applications. For example, CBSA/Metropolitan Divisions cover only the 935 metropolitan and micropolitan areas defined by OMB, while the market areas cover rural, metropolitan, and micropolitan areas of the entire country. These two products cost the same.

ZIPList5 CBSA is formatted as a comma-delimited ASCII text file, making it easy to import the data into most database programs. Also available in native MS Access 2003, Access 2000, dBase/Visual FoxPro, and Paradox formats.

We verify and update every record of ZIPList5 CBSA every month at the first of the month. You always receive the latest and most up-to-date data from us. You can't get more accurate and timely ZIP code data from any other source! We include the most recent area code changes in every update. We license our ZIP code data directly from the US Postal Service, and collect all the other data continuously from a variety of sources, including the Census Bureau, Office of Management and Budget, NANPA, the telephone companies, and maps.

Record Layout
The fields are defined as follows:

Field Type Length
City Name Variable length 28 maximum
State Code Fixed length 2
ZIP code Fixed length 5 numeric characters
Area code Fixed length 3 numeric characters
County FIPS Fixed length 5 numeric characters
County Name Variable length 25 maximum
Time zone Variable length 5 maximum
DST Fixed length 1 ("Y" or "N")
CBSA Fixed length 5 numeric characters or blank
Div Fixed length 5 numeric characters or blank
ZIP code type Fixed length 1 character (P, U, M, or blank)

The city name field contains the one "preferred" city name for this particular ZIP code as defined by the US Postal Service. This database contains only one record for each active ZIP code, and does NOT list any possible "alias" city names for any ZIP code.

The ZIP code field lists only valid 5-digit ZIP codes currently defined by the USPS. Obsolete ZIP codes which have been "retired" from service by the USPS are not included in this database.

The area code is the "most prevalent" area code for that one ZIP code. If multiple area codes apply to that one ZIP code, only the primary area code is listed. Overlay area codes are not listed.

The County FIPS code is a 5-digit numeric field containing a unique numeric identification assigned to that county by the US government. The County FIPS code field and the County Name field identify the "most prevalent" county for the 5-digit ZIP code listed in a given record.

The time zone field always contains the standard time zone designation for a particular ZIP code. If that ZIP code falls within a political entity which participates in Daylight Saving Time (DST) during the summer months, the DST field is set to "Y". Otherwise the DST field is set to "N".

The CBSA field contains the Metropolitan Statistical Area code or Micropolitan Statistical Area code, if any, in which some or all of the ZIP code lies. The CBSA is a 5-digit FIPS code assigned by the White House's Office of Management and Budget. ZIPList5 CBSA includes a cross-reference file listing all valid metropolitan statistical areas and micropolitan statistical areas and their CBSA codes.

The Div field contains the Metropolitan Statistical Area Division code, if any, in which some or all of the ZIP code lies. The Metropolitan Division is a 5-digit FIPS code assigned by the White House's Office of Management and Budget. ZIPList5 CBSA includes a cross-reference file listing all valid Metropolitan Division codes.

The ZIP Code type field identifies special ZIP codes used for PO Boxes, companies, or the military.

County, ZIP code, and area code boundaries
County boundaries, state boundaries, ZIP code boundaries, area code boundaries, and time zone boundaries are all administered by different federal, state, and local government and private agencies. As you probably already know, cooperation between these various agencies is virtually nonexistent. As a result, these various boundaries do not necessarily align. This means that a given ZIP code area may actually cross one or more county, area code, and/or time zone boundaries. But each ZIP code record in ZIPList5 CBSA has only a single field each for county name, area code, or time zone. An attempt to add additional records to document all the variations which can occur would make the product too complex and difficult to use, and is beyond the scope of this inexpensive database.

We have attempted to provide the most accurate information for each ZIP code by selecting the most prevalent county, area code, and time zone for each ZIP code in the database. However, you should be aware that because of this boundary alignment problem, the county name and FIPS code, area code, and time zone provided for each ZIP code in the database may not apply to every address which lies within the boundaries of that ZIP code.
