Description ZIPList5 Market Area is a ZIP code database file defining a market area for every 5-digit ZIP code which lies within the 50 states. The file also includes the city name, state abbreviation, county name and county FIPS code, primary telephone area code, time zone, daylight saving time flag and ZIP code type for each ZIP code. ZIPList5 Market Area also includes a separate cross-reference file defining the market areas by primary city name and their associated market area codes. ZIP codes are updated monthly. Market area definitions and codes remain stable from month to month. This market area scheme divides the 50 states and Puerto Rico into 280 unique geographic market areas. Each ZIP code in the 50 states is assigned to the appropriate market area. A particular market area may consist of ZIP codes in one, two, or more contiguous states. This market area geographic system has gained general acceptance within the business community as a basic approach to structuring advertising and promotion as well as setting up distribution systems, sales territories, and franchise territories, etc. The market area scheme is superior to a scheme based on MSA/PMSA because a market area generally covers an area considerably larger than the corresponding MSA/PMSA, there are fewer market areas than MSA/PMSAs, and market areas cover the entire country, while MSA/PMSAs omit the rural areas of most states. This market area definition scheme is superior to market area definitions based on broadcast television viewing patterns. TV coverage areas are significantly distorted, especially in the western states, by cable and satellite usage, leading to non-contiguous geographic areas being combined into a single market area. Our market area scheme avoids this problem because the market area definitions are based strictly on geography instead of television viewing patterns. This ZIP code database file is formatted as a comma-delimited ASCII text file, making it easy to import the data into most database programs. It is also available in native MS Access, dBase, and Paradox formats. We update every record in ZIPList5 Market Area monthly, so you always receive the latest and most up-to-date data. You can't get more accurate and timely ZIP code data from any other source! We include the most recent area code changes in every update. We license our ZIP code data directly from the US Postal Service, and collect all the other data continuously from a variety of other sources.
Record Layout
The city name field contains the one "preferred" city name for this particular ZIP code as defined by the US Postal Service. This database contains only one record for each active ZIP code, and does NOT list any possible "alias" city names for any ZIP code. The ZIP code field lists only valid 5-digit ZIP codes currently defined by the USPS. Obsolete ZIP codes which have been "retired" from service by the USPS are not included in this database. The area code is the "most prevalent" area code for that one ZIP code. If multiple area codes apply to that one ZIP code, only the primary area code is listed. Overlay area codes are not listed. The County FIPS code is a 5-digit numeric field containing a unique numeric identification assigned to that county by the US government. The County FIPS code field and the County Name field identify the "most prevalent" county for the 5-digit ZIP code listed in a given record. The time zone field always contains the standard time zone designation for a particular ZIP code. If that ZIP code falls within a political entity which participates in Daylight Saving Time (DST) during the summer months, the DST field is set to "Y". Otherwise the DST field is set to "N". The market area field contains the 3-digit Market Area code, if any, in which some or all of the ZIP code lies. A cross-reference file defining all market area codes, the market area population, and their geographic name (usually one or more city names) is included with the database. The ZIP Code type field identifies special ZIP codes used for PO Boxes, companies, or the military.
Market area, county, ZIP code, and area code boundaries We have attempted to provide the most accurate information for each ZIP code by selecting the most prevalent county, area code, and time zone, and market area code for each ZIP code in the database. However, you should be aware that because of this boundary alignment problem, the market area code, county name and FIPS code, area code, and time zone provided for each ZIP code in the database may not apply to every address which lies within the boundaries of that ZIP code.
