Description This database file lists every active ZIP code and postal code for both the USA and Canada. It includes city (including alias city names), state/province, area code, time zone, daylight saving time, latitude, and longitude for each ZIP/postal code for both the USA and Canada. In addition, for ZIP codes (USA only) it includes county name and FIPS code, MSA, PMSA, city name abbreviation, Market Area, and ZIP code type. You can incorporate this data into your own dealer/store locator applications to find all stores within a radius or to find the closest store. (We include the distance calculation equations.) Or use this data file with popular commercial database programs such as MS Access, dBase, Paradox, FoxPro, etc.
We update every ZIP code record in ZIPList Can-USA Max monthly, so you always receive the latest and most up-to-date data. You can't get more accurate and timely ZIP code data from any other source! (Canadian postal code data is updated quarterly.) We include the most recent area code changes in every update. Our data comes directly from the US Postal Service and Canada Post Corporation. We collect and cross-check all the other data continuously from a variety of sources, including NANPA, the telephone companies, and maps. ZIPList Can-USA Max documentation also includes a tutorial and equations for calculating the distance in miles between ZIP codes using latitude and longitude.
Record Layout
The City field identifies a city name associated with the ZIP/postal code. There can be several different city names associated with a particular ZIP or postal code. If so, that ZIP/postal code may appear in several different records, each with a different city name. The Preferred field (described below) identifies whether the city name in this record is the primary city name or an alias (alternate) city name for this ZIP/postal code. Note that some city names in Quebec contain special diacritical marks. The character set employed for these characters is ISO-8859-1. An English-only version of this product is available for those applications which cannot use the French spellings. The State/Province field contains the standard 2-character abbreviation for the state or province. The ZIP/postal code field contains only valid ZIP codes currently defined by the US Postal Service or postal codes defined by Canada Post Corporation (CPC). Obsolete ZIP/postal codes which have been "retired" from service are not included in this database. The Country field contains a single character which identifies whether the record is a USA record ("U") or a Canadian record ("C"). The ZIP Code type field (USA only) identifies special ZIP codes used for PO Boxes, companies, or the military. The Preferred flag can have one of three states, which indicate how that city name can be used for delivery of mail to the associated ZIP/postal code. The three states are:
The one preferred name record has the preferred field set to "P", while all alias name records have the preferred field set to "A" or "N". Note that in some cases a particular name may be preferred for some ZIP codes but an alias name for other ZIP codes. This frequently occurs when the exact political boundary between adjacent cities is obscure, leading people to use the two city names interchangeably within the boundary area. The Area code is the "most prevalent" area code for that one postal code. If multiple area codes apply to that one postal code, only the primary area code is listed. Overlay area codes are not included in this database. The County FIPS code (USA only) is a 5-digit numeric field containing a unique numeric identification assigned to that county by the US government. The County FIPS code field and the County Name field identify the "most prevalent" county for the 5-digit ZIP code listed in a given record. The County Name field (USA only) identifies the "most prevalent" county for the 5-digit ZIP code listed in a given record. Note: This field applies to ZIP code (USA) records only. In all Canadian records this field is empty. The Time zone field always contains the standard time zone designation for a particular postal code. If that postal code falls within a political entity which participates in daylight saving time (DST) during the summer months, the DST field is set to "Y". Otherwise the DST field is set to "N". The latitude and longitude fields contain the geographic coordinates in degrees to four decimal places, providing a general level of accuracy of under 100 feet. Latitude and longitude are measured north from the equator or west from the prime meridian. Longitude for all records is presented as a positive number to minimize the file size. For larger Canadian cities, we resolve the latitude and longitude based on the first three characters of the postal code (known as the "Forward Sortation Area", or FSA), which corresponds to the 5-digit ZIP code level in the US. The larger Canadian cities often have more than 50 FSAs. This keeps the cost of the product within reason, yet provides a level of resolution perfect for dealer locator and store locator applications. For rural Canadian areas, in most cases, the database contains the latitude and longitude of the center of the city or town. For villages and very small towns in close proximity the database contains the latitude and longitude of the general geographic area. In general, the latitude and longitude values relate to the geographic centroid of the ZIP code or postal code area, not the population centroid. The MSA field (USA only) contains the Metropolitan Statistical Area code, if any, in which the ZIP code lies. The MSA is assigned by the US Government. The PMSA field (USA only) contains the Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area code, if any, in which the ZIP code lies. The PMSA is assigned by the US Government. The City Name Abbreviation field (USA only) contains the US Postal Service "official" abbreviation for the city name in those cases where the city name exceeds 13 characters. For those cities where the name is 13 or fewer characters this field is blank. The Market Area field (USA only) contains the three-digit Market Area code in which the ZIP code lies.
