Description
ZIPList5 Max is a 5-digit Zipcode data file which includes latitude and longitude, MSA/PMSA, and market area. The file is available in comma-delimited ASCII format, as well as MS Access, dBase, and Paradox database formats. The file contains about 71,500 records (42,700 "preferred" records plus 28,800 "alias" records), covering all valid Zipcodes to which the US Postal Service delivers mail.

Each ZIPList5 Max record contains the following data:

  • 5-digit Zipcode
  • City name (and abbreviation, if over 13 characters)
  • State abbreviation
  • County name (for that Zipcode)
  • County FIPS code
  • Area code
  • Time zone
  • Daylight Saving Time flag
  • Latitude and longitude in degrees
  • MSA/PMSA code
  • Market Area
  • Preferred name or alias name flag (refers to city name)
  • Zipcode type

Included with the ZIPList5 Max data file are these support files:

  • MSA/PMSA codes: list of all valid MSA/PMSA/CMSA codes assigned by the US Government
  • State FIPS codes: list of all state FIPS codes, including the territories
  • Market area codes: list of active market area codes and the areas they cover

ZIPList5 Max documentation also includes a tutorial and equations for calculating the distance in miles between Zipcodes using latitude and longitude.

We update every record in ZIPList5 Max monthly, so you always receive the latest and most up-to-date data. You can't get more accurate and timely Zipcode data from any other source! We include the most recent area code changes in every update. We license our Zipcode data directly from the US Postal Service, and collect and cross-check all the other data continuously from a variety of sources, including the Census Bureau, the US Geological Survey, the Office of Management and Budget, NANPA, the telephone companies, and maps.

Please note: ZIPList5 Max is not a program; it is a data file. ZIPList5 Max does not include a program to search, sort, or print out the data. To make use of the data contained in ZIPList5 Max you must use it with your own database program. ZIPList5 Max works well with almost any commercial database program, including MS Access, dBase, FoxPro, Paradox, etc. In fact, we already have formatted ZIPList5 Max for use with MS Access, dBase/FoxPro, and Paradox at no extra charge.

  • Almost 71,500 records (42,700 preferred records plus 28,800 alias records)
  • Includes common local city names and city name abbreviations
  • Updated monthly

Record Layout
The data records of the ZIPList5 Max file consist of sixteen quote-delimited, comma-separated, ASCII text fields, arranged as follows:

"City Name","State Code","Zipcode","Area code","County FIPS code","County Name","Preferred flag","Time zone","DST?","Latitude","Longitude","MSA","PMSA","City abbreviation","Market area","Zipcode Type"CRLF

The fields are defined as follows:

Field Type Length
City Name Variable length ASCII 28 maximum, mixed case
State Code Fixed length ASCII 2 alpha characters (CA, UT, etc.)
Zipcode Fixed length ASCII 5 numeric characters
Area code Fixed length ASCII 3 numeric characters
County FIPS Fixed length ASCII 5 numeric characters
County Name Variable length ASCII 25 maximum, mixed case
Preferred? Fixed length ASCII 1 ("P","A", or "N")
Time zone Variable length ASCII 5 maximum (EST, CST, MST, etc.)
DST? Fixed length ASCII 1 ("Y" or "N")
Latitude Fixed length ASCII 7 characters: nn.nnnn, in degrees
Longitude Variable length ASCII 7 or 8 characters: nnn.nnnn, in degrees
MSA Fixed length ASCII 4 numeric characters or blank
PMSA Fixed length ASCII 4 numeric characters or blank
City Name Abbreviation Variable length ASCII 13 maximum, mixed case or blank
Market Area Fixed length ASCII 3 numeric characters or blank
Zipcode type Fixed length ASCII 1 character (P, U, M, or blank)

The City Name field identifies a city name associated with the Zipcode by the USPS. There may be several different city names associated with a particular Zipcode. If so, the Zipcode will appear in several different records, each with a different city name.

The Zipcode field lists only valid 5-digit Zipcodes currently defined by the USPS. Obsolete Zipcodes which have been "retired" from service by the USPS are not included in this database. A particular Zipcode may appear in more than one record if the USPS has defined more than one city name for that Zipcode.

The area code is the "most prevalent" area code for that one Zipcode. If multiple area codes apply to that one Zipcode, only the primary area code is listed. Overlay area codes are not listed.

The County FIPS code is a 5-digit numeric field containing a unique numeric identification assigned to that county by the US government. The County FIPS code field and the County Name field identify the "most prevalent" county for the 5-digit Zipcode listed in a given record.

The Preferred? flag can have one of three states, which indicate how that name can be used for delivery of mail to the associated Zipcode. The three states are:

  • P - This is the preferred city name for this Zipcode
  • A - This city name is approved (but NOT preferred) for this Zipcode
  • N - The city name is NOT approved for mail delivery to this Zipcode
Some people object to using the "preferred" name specified by the US Postal Service; these people may instead use some other, locally preferred name. This can be quite confusing. Accordingly, we have included in the database these "alias" city names, along with the Zipcodes to which they apply. This means that a particular Zipcode may exist in a "preferred name" record and again in one or more "alias name" records.

The one preferred name record has the preferred field set to "P", while all alias name records have the preferred field set to "A" or "N". Note that in some cases a particular name may be preferred for some Zipcodes but an alias name for other Zipcodes. This frequently occurs when the exact political boundary between adjacent cities is obscure, leading people to use the two city names interchangeably within the boundary area.

The time zone field always contains the standard time zone designation for a particular Zipcode. If that Zipcode falls within a political entity which participates in Daylight Saving Time (DST) during the summer months, the DST field is set to "Y". Otherwise the DST field is set to "N".

The latitude and longitude fields contain the geographic coordinates in decimal degrees of the "centroid" of the Zipcode area, measured north from the equator and west from the prime meridian. Depending upon the shape of the Zipcode area, the centroid may actually lie outside of the Zipcode's boundaries. Longitude for all US Zipcodes is presented as a positive number, although all values should be taken as negative (west of the prime meridian).

The MSA field contains the Metropolitan Statistical Area code, if any, in which the Zipcode lies. The MSA is assigned by the US Government.

The PMSA field contains the Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area code, if any, in which the Zipcode lies. The PMSA is assigned by the US Government.

The City Name Abbreviation field contains the US Postal Service "official" abbreviation for the city name in those cases where the city name exceeds 13 characters. For those cities where the name is 13 or fewer characters this field is blank.

The Market Area field contains the three-digit Market Area code in which the Zipcode lies. For more information about market area click here.

The Zipcode type field identifies special Zipcodes used for PO Boxes, companies, or the military.

County, Zipcode, area code boundaries
County boundaries, state boundaries, Zipcode boundaries, area code boundaries, and time zone boundaries are all administered by different federal, state, local government and private agencies. As you probably already know, cooperation between these various agencies is virtually nonexistent. As a result, these various boundaries do not necessarily align. This means that a given Zipcode area may actually cross one or more county, area code, and/or time zone boundaries. But each Zipcode record in ZIPList5 Max has only a single field each for county name, area code, or time zone. An attempt to add additional records to document all the variations which can occur would make the product too complex and difficult to use, and is beyond the scope of this inexpensive database.

We have attempted to provide the most accurate information for each Zipcode by selecting the most prevalent county, area code, and time zone for each Zipcode in the database. However, you should be aware that because of this boundary alignment problem, the county name and FIPS code, area code, and time zone provided for each Zipcode in the database may not apply to every address which lies within the boundaries of that Zipcode.
