Description The Place Name Database contains the names of US cities, towns, counties, military bases, airports, federal facilities, national parks, prisons, branch post offices, Indian reservations, and other "populated places" as defined by the US Census Bureau and the US Government. For each place name the database includes the place FIPS code, the state abbreviation and FIPS code, the county name and FIPS code, and the MSA (if any). FIPS stands for Federal Information Processing Standard, a data encoding standard defined and used by the US government. The database is available in two formats: comma delimited ASCII and native MS Access 97. The database contains more than 196,000 place name records, and is approximately 13 MB in size (uncompressed). The ASCII file can be searched using most text editors and word processors, or can be imported into most commercial database programs, such as Paradox, dBase, or Visual FoxPro. Because this database is available as a simple text file, it can be used on almost every type of computer, including PCs and compatibles, Macintoshes, and UNIX workstations.

Note that all FIPS fields and the MSA field are treated as text fields. This prevents the loss of leading zeroes in these fields when the data is imported into a database program. The Place Name is the actual name by which the place is locally known. We have standardized spellings to eliminate abbreviations and alternate spellings where practical. The State code is the normal two-letter abbreviation for the state, as assigned by the US Postal Service. The Place FIPS code is a 5-digit numeric field containing a unique numeric identification assigned to each city, town, borough, village, or census district in a given state by the US government. The Place Type field broadly defines the place as a city, town, or other entity. This is an interpretation of the Census Bureau place class code. The Place Class is the specific definition of the place type, accoding to Census Bureau standards. We include with the database a list of Census Bureau place class codes. The State FIPS code is a two-digit numeric code assigned by the US Government to each of the states and territories of the USA. The County FIPS identifies a county which contains some portion of the place. The County FIPS Code is a 3-digit field containing a unique numeric identification assigned to each county in a given state by the US government. Note: if a place lies in more than one county, the County Count field contains a number greater than 1, indicating the number of different counties which contain some portion of the place. The County Name field is the name of the county defined by the County FIPS field. Note that for Alaska, which has no counties, this name represents a "county equivalent" defined for statistical purposes by the Census Bureau. The MSA/PMSA field contains the Metropolitan Statistical Area code or Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area code, if any, in which the place lies. The MSA/PMSA code is assigned by the Office of Management and Budget of the US Government. Note: only places which exist within defined "metropolitan" areas have an MSA or PMSA code. Most rural places do not have an assigned MSA/PMSA code. We include with the database a list of all MSA/PMSA codes. The County Count field indicates the number of counties in which some portion of the place lies. For most places this count is one, indicating that the place lies entirely within a single county. A County Count greater than one means that the place crosses county boundaries and lies partially within multiple counties. This also means that the place name is represented in the Place Name Database by a group of similar place name records. There is one record for each county in which the place partially lies. The County Number field indicates the record number within a group of records belonging to a place which exists in multiple counties.
